2 Peter 2:10-12

"This is especially true of those who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature and despise authority. Bold and arrogant, these men are not afraid to slander the celestial beings; yet even angels, although they are stronger and more powerful, do not bring slanderous accusations against such beings in the presence of the Lord. But these men blaspheme in matters they do not understand. They are like brute beasts, creatures of instinct, born only to be caught and destroyed, and like beasts they too will perish." 2 Peter 2:10-12

Peter just finished asserting that God knows what He is doing. He knows how to punish the wicked. He then gives a more specific situation. He begins to talk about people who follow the corrupt desire of the sinful nature and despise authority. These are people who will do what ever they want to do. Peter calls them bold and arrogant and the even have the gall to slander celestial beings. They mock God and have a very high opinion of themselves. These people will be punished. Sadly, that kind of arrogance is everywhere in our society and it's not getting any better. I can't tell you how often I turn on the TV to watch a show only to see Hollywood glorify such an attitude. They mock God and His people. They become a god themselves by despising any authority in their life and doing as they please. People just want to indulge in their sinful nature. Why is the Porn business a billion dollar enterprise which seem to have a monopoly on the web? Because people want to follow the corrupt desires of their sinful nature. The movie, "The Golden Compass", was a perfect example of this attitude. The girl's disdain for authority was glorified and the church (the organization that was oppressing people) was seen as evil. The arrogance of that movie was incredible. Those who don't want to be accountable to a creator and live under the authority of an Almighty God probably liked the movie and could relate, but to those of us who believe in the Creator and Sustainor of life, the movie was arrogant and such a mockery of God. Be on your guard! Don't fall into the lure of a godless life, after all, most of us, if not all, have a sinful attraction to the idea of no authority. No one likes to be accountable, but that doesn't change reality. "Humble yourself before the Lord and He will lift you up" (James 4:10).
